In many cases, colored lines or marks found on toilet paper are simply manufacturing indicators. During production, factories often use colored markings to identify different product batches, signal the end of a production roll, or assist quality-control workers in monitoring the manufacturing process.
These marks are usually printed on the inner layers or edges of the roll and are completely harmless. They are created using food-safe or non-toxic inks designed specifically for paper products.
Although they may look alarming when first noticed, they are not evidence that someone has contaminated the paper.
Why Do These Photos Go Viral?
Images like this spread quickly because they trigger curiosity and concern. Public restrooms already make many people uneasy due to concerns about cleanliness, so a mysterious red mark naturally invites speculation.
Social media algorithms also reward surprising or emotional content. A dramatic warning often receives thousands of shares before anyone stops to verify whether it’s true.
As a result, harmless manufacturing features can easily become internet mysteries.
Are There Ever Legitimate Reasons to Avoid a Restroom Product?
Yes.
While colored manufacturing marks themselves are generally not dangerous, there are situations where you should avoid using restroom supplies.
For example:
If the toilet paper appears wet or damp.
If it has an unusual odor.
If the packaging or dispenser has clearly been damaged.
If you notice visible dirt, mold, insects, or other contamination.
If the restroom itself appears unsanitary.
In these cases, it may be best to find another restroom or use personal tissues if available.
