One of the deepest friendships Reeves formed in Hollywood was with fellow actor River Phoenix. Several years later, happiness appeared to be returning. Reeves met actress Jennifer Syme, and the couple fell deeply in love. Together they looked forward to becoming parents. Friends described them as excited and hopeful as they prepared to welcome their daughter into the world. But in late 1999, tragedy struck in the most heartbreaking way imaginable. Their baby daughter, Ava Archer Syme-Reeves, was stillborn only weeks before her expected birth.
The unimaginable grief changed both of their lives forever. The loss placed enormous emotional strain on their relationship, and despite their love for one another, they eventually separated while continuing to care deeply for each other. Then came another devastating blow.
In April 2001, Jennifer Syme died in a car accident in Los Angeles at just 28 years old. The woman Reeves had once planned to build a family with was suddenly gone.
