Daniel stood behind her.
And the look in his eyes – I’ve never seen anything like this before.
Disappointment. Pain. Confusion.
“What’s going on?” I whispered.
Daniel spoke first.
“She didn’t come here to ruin your life.”
It squeezed in my throat.
“She came to save them.”
He stepped slightly to the side.
“She’s the right stem cell donor for Lily.”
My knees buckled.
Lily.
Our sweet, fragile Lily, who has been waiting for a transplant for months. A child whose illness dominated our lives. Night visits to the hospital. Endless waiting for a miracle that didn’t seem to be coming.
My daughter – the child I left behind – saw our appeal for online donation. She recognized the name. She did the calculations. She found us.
And instead of anger…
She offered herself.
“She’s my sister,” she said quietly, standing up. Her voice was firm. “I would never just leave her like that.”
I couldn’t breathe.
