What I Found Beneath b! My Mattress—and Why It’s Worth Checking Yours Too

Although carpet beetles are not considered harmful to people, they can become an unwelcome household nuisance. Adult beetles are generally harmless, but their larvae feed on natural materials such as wool, feathers, pet hair, and certain fabrics. As they grow, the larvae shed their skins, leaving behind small shells that can easily be mistaken for more serious pests. Because these insects often hide under furniture, along baseboards, inside closets, and beneath mattresses, many homeowners do not notice them until the evidence becomes more visible.

With the mystery solved, I focused on cleaning the room thoroughly. I vacuumed beneath the bed, around the baseboards, under nearby furniture, and in every corner where dust had collected. Bedding was washed in hot water according to the care instructions, and I carefully inspected stored clothing and blankets for any additional signs of carpet beetles. Regular vacuuming and reducing dust, lint, and pet hair are simple steps that can help discourage these insects from settling indoors.
