What is the function of the appendix?

Inflammation is caused by a blockage of the lumen of the appendix (its inner cavity) due to hardened stools, intestinal parasites, inflammation of the lymphoid tissue, or, in rare cases, tumors. This blockage causes bacteria and fluids to build up, causing inflammation, swelling, and pus to form.
· Symptoms: Symptoms come and go worse within 24 hours. They include:

· Abdominal pain, which is the most common sign. It usually starts around the belly button and then moves to the lower right part of the abdomen. The pain gets worse when you cough or walk.
· Loss of appetite, nausea, and vomiting.
· Mild fever, which may increase as the swelling gets worse.
· Abdominal bloating, constipation, or diarrhea.
· Note: The location of the pain may vary depending on the person’s age and the position of the appendix. In pregnant women, the pain may be felt in the upper abdomen.

🏥 Diagnosis and treatment

· Diagnosis: Based on physical examination, blood tests, ultrasound, or computed tomography (CT) scan.
· Treatment: Appendectomy (removal of the appendix) is the main and most common treatment.
· Appendectomy: This is the surgical procedure to remove the swollen appendix. It can be performed in two ways: open surgery or laparoscopic surgery (which is the most modern and is characterized by a faster recovery).
· Antibiotics: In some mild and uncomplicated cases, treatment may be limited to antibiotics only, under strict medical supervision.
