He wanted to convince himself that this was an isolated incident, an almost impossible oddity. But as a mother, the idea was terrifying to her. We trust that the food we buy for our children is safe, not that it hides desert creatures.
The company’s response
A few days later, the company contacted us again. He offered formal apologies, promised to review his manufacturing processes and proposed compensation to the family. However, what the mother was looking for were not coupons or free replacements. He wanted the certainty that something like this would never happen to another child.
In its statement, the company described the event as “extremely unusual” and probably attributed it to “contamination during the handling of raw materials.” They said they were reviewing their safety procedures at the plant. True or not, in that home nothing would be the same.
