Quebecers will have their eyes turned to the sky on August 12, 2026. While the solar eclipse will be total in Iceland and parts of Spain, it will be partial in Quebec, where it will still be possible to safely witness this astronomical phenomenon.

According to the Espace pour la vie website, the spectacle will be visible throughout the province, but its extent will vary depending on your location.

A more spectacular eclipse in northern Quebec
A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, obscuring part or all of our star.

On August 12, the eclipse will be total in a narrow band crossing, among other places, Greenland, Iceland, and Spain. In Quebec, only part of the solar disk will be obscured.

The degree of obscuration will depend on your location. The southernmost regions of the province will see less than a quarter of the Sun disappear:

Montreal: 18.3%
Quebec City: 24.0%
Sherbrooke: 20.4%
However, in northern Quebec, particularly in Kuujjuaq, more than 50% of the Sun’s surface will be hidden at the maximum of the eclipse.
